Rebecca Comber – Paralegal Apprentice

This case study is from Rebecca Comber, Paralegal Apprentice at Forbes Solicitors.

What is your job title?

I am a paralegal within the private family team at Forbes Solicitors.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

Upon moving to Forbes and starting a new role in family law I found a new enthusiasm for law and I was keen to progress my career. An apprenticeship seemed the best option for me to be able continue working, gaining invaluable experience, whilst also progressing my legal knowledge and career prospects.

What sort of activities do you do in your role?

I assist my supervising solicitor with her caseload which covers all areas of private family law such as divorce and financial proceedings, and issues regarding children and domestic violence injunctions. My role involves me attending upon new and existing clients to obtain instructions, preparing court documents, ensuring cases are ready for court and assisting barristers at court.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship so far?

I have really enjoyed learning about my new area of law and have found the information I have learnt during my apprenticeship to be invaluable. Learning whilst working has really helped me to improve my legal knowledge and I feel it has helped me provide a better level of assistance to both colleagues and clients.

How have you found your training with Damar?

I have found training with Damar enjoyable – the live workshops proved especially helpful when trying to get to grips with more complex areas. Being able to have access to a personal tutor and fellow apprentices to discuss matters has been really helpful, especially in the run up to exams.

What do you think your biggest achievement so far has been as an apprentice?
My biggest achievements at this stage are passing all my exams and moving quickly through the courses.

What are your plans after you complete your apprenticeship?

My level 6 apprenticeship has now been approved and I am due to start this shortly as my career goal is to become a qualified chartered legal executive specialising in family law.
