Serena Evans

Serena Evans – Business Administrator Apprentice

Serena is a business admin apprentice at Ofsted. She recently completed her end-point assessment and achieved full marks across the knowledge test, portfolio-based interview and project presentation, which is a massive achievement and a testament to her hard work and dedication.

In this case study, Serena told us about why she chose the apprenticeship, what she has gained from it, and her plans for the future.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I decided to apply for an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain hands-on knowledge and skills from others, rather than studying at university. I knew university wasn’t for me at the time and I didn’t want to put myself into significant debt when other routes like apprenticeships were an option. I thought admin would be a great role to start in to learn software, develop my professional communication and gain transferable skills.

What have you gained from the apprenticeship?

I have gained a wide range of skills throughout the apprenticeship. In particular I have developed strong verbal and written communication skills, which I will be able to use throughout my career. I have also built strong working relationships with colleagues and senior people across my organisation which has ensured I have succeeded in my role as an administrator, and hopefully beyond.

How do you feel about completing the apprenticeship and the results you’ve achieved?

I am incredibly pleased with the apprenticeship results I received, and it feels great to know my dedication has paid off. Alongside my apprenticeship qualification, I also now have 18 months of experience in my role.

How was your experience with Damar Training?

My experience with Damar Training has been fantastic. My coach, Louise, was very supportive throughout my journey and was always happy to schedule additional meetings. The weekly structure for each module also really helped me to stay on track, and it provided an opportunity to ask questions at the group coaching sessions or coaching visits.

What would be your advice for someone considering a similar apprenticeship?

My advice for those considering a similar apprenticeship is to be enthusiastic about your role and apprenticeship. Ensuring that you enjoy the apprenticeship course will keep you motivated to achieve well at EPA! Also, never be afraid to ask your manager, coach and colleagues questions!

What are your future career plans?

My aspiration is for promotion within my current team and to keep developing my knowledge by learning from others. In the future, I would also value the opportunity to be a mentor for someone else in a similar apprenticeship position.
