This is the first paralegal apprenticeship in England to deliver comprehensive, specialised intellectual property training as an integral part of the programme. It’s purpose-built from the ground up to meet the real-world needs of IP practices, patent and trademark attorney firms and in-house IP departments.
The CIPA collaboration ensures every element reflects current industry standards and practical realities. When your apprentice completes this pathway, they’ll have specialised IP knowledge that typically takes years to develop through on-the-job experience alone.
IP curriculum
The IP specialist pathway includes focused intellectual property training, covering the breadth and depth that IP paralegals genuinely need:
Core IP foundations establishes essential knowledge: Fundamental principles of IP law, different types of IP rights, the UK IP framework and key institutions and distinctions between registered and unregistered rights.
Patents: UK and European systems provides detailed knowledge of UK patent law and procedure, including the application process from filing through grant. Apprentices learn European patent applications, patent prosecution support, patent searching, and patentability requirements – enabling them to provide genuinely useful support rather than simply processing paperwork.
Designs: registered and unregistered rights covers both UK and EU design protection, including registration processes, scope of protection and enforcement considerations. Apprentices understand when registration is advisable and grasp practical implications for different industries.
Trademarks and the Madrid System delivers detailed training in UK and EU trademark law, registration processes and examination of grounds for refusal. Crucially, the pathway includes coverage of the Madrid Protocol and international trademark systems – essential for managing international portfolios in today’s global marketplace.
Enforcement and litigation covers IP enforcement mechanisms, cease and desist letters, settlement negotiations and litigation processes. Apprentices learn about available remedies and how to support enforcement actions from investigation through resolution.
Throughout, the curriculum emphasises practical application through realistic scenarios, case studies from actual IP practice and exercises that mirror real workplace challenges.
IP training delivery

Specialist IP workshops led by subject matter experts provide focused training on complex topics, opportunities for questions and exploration and networking with peers.
