Kieran King – Solicitor Apprentice

Kieran King is a solicitor apprentice at Brabners, a leading independent UK law firm. In this case study, he tells us about his experience so far and offers advice for other individuals considering the apprenticeship.

Why did you choose to do the solicitor apprenticeship?

The solicitor apprenticeship has provided me with the opportunity to study for the SQE whilst continuing to gain experience in my day-to-day role. It is the perfect way for me work towards becoming a qualified solicitor.

What do you think are the advantages of qualifying through an apprenticeship as opposed to more traditional pathways?

The apprenticeship is extremely flexible. It allows me to split my week between study and work, and I find that my studies benefit me in my role, and vice versa, the tasks that I perform in my role often crop up throughout my studies. The two aspects combine together exceptionally well.

What have you learned and how has the apprenticeship impacted you so far?

Throughout my apprenticeship, I have been provided with opportunities to grow my skillset and improve my knowledge of key legal areas. The apprenticeship has allowed me to effectively prepare for SQE exams and also expand my experiences in my day-to-day role.

What impact do you think you’ve had on your organisation during your apprenticeship?

My apprenticeship has allowed me to grow within my organisation and I am very thankful for the trust they have placed in me. My apprenticeship has improved my range of skills, and I believe I am a more rounded individual as a result. I hope my improved ability enables me to work more effectively for Brabners.

How have you found the apprenticeship and working with Damar Training and the BARBRI learning platform?

I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship so far. My experiences of both Damar Training and BARBRI have been very positive. Both Damar and BARBRI have simple-to-use systems which make learning a very straightforward process. It is also very easy to record my experiences of both systems and plan my future progression.

What are your future career plans?

I will be sitting the SQE2 exams in April 2025. From then onwards, I aim to qualify as a solicitor.

What advice would you give to other people considering the apprenticeship?

I would just say go for it! The apprenticeship has been a fantastic opportunity personally and I am confident it gives people the most effective and balanced way of qualifying as a solicitor.

What advice would you give to new solicitor apprentices commencing their programme in order to maximise their chances of success?

I would say to have faith in both the Damar and BARBRI systems. There is a really nice mix between independent and group learning. Should you stick with the BARBRI learning plan, I am confident you would go into the SQE exams feeling well prepared.
