Apprentice Kate

Kate Cookson – Business Admin Apprentice

We are delighted to announce that Damar’s very own apprentice, Kate, has achieved a distinction in her business administration end-point assessment. She has done some amazing work during her time at Damar so far, supporting colleagues, employers and apprentices within our Business Support Unit.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain hands-on experience while earning a qualification. I felt that a traditional university path might not provide the practical skills and exposure to a real workplace environment that I needed to thrive in business administration. The apprenticeship allowed me to learn on the job, build connections, and see how concepts are applied in the real world.

What activities do you do in your day-to-day role and what do you enjoy most about your job?

In my day-to-day role, I handle a variety of tasks, such as managing correspondence, coordinating schedules, preparing reports, and ensuring efficient office operations. I also support team projects by organising meetings and tracking deadlines. What I enjoy most is the variety, no two days are the same and the sense of accomplishment when I help the team meet their goals. Being able to solve problems and streamline processes is particularly rewarding.

How has the apprenticeship impacted on you?

The apprenticeship has significantly boosted my confidence and developed my skills in communication, organisation, and problem solving. I’ve learned to manage my time effectively and take responsibility for my work, which has had a positive impact on both my professional and personal life. It has also provided me with a clearer career path and valuable insights into the business world.

What do you think you’ve contributed to Damar during your apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship, I’ve contributed by bringing a fresh perspective to tasks and processes. I’ve taken on responsibilities that have helped improve efficiency, such as reorganising filing systems and implementing better tracking processes to benefit the entire organisation. My proactive approach and willingness to learn have allowed me to add value by supporting each department effectively and suggesting improvements where possible.

How have you found working with Damar as your training provider?

Working with Damar has been a great experience. The support and guidance from my coach have been invaluable, and the learning materials are practical and relevant. They’ve helped me balance my work responsibilities with my studies and provided regular feedback to ensure I’m progressing. The group coaching sessions have been engaging and tailored to my goals, making the entire process smooth and rewarding.

What are your future career plans?

In the future, I hope to continue advancing within the business, perhaps taking on a managerial role or specialising in a particular area like project management or HR. I’m also considering further qualifications to deepen my expertise and broaden my career opportunities. The apprenticeship has laid a strong foundation, and I’m excited about where my journey will take me next.
