Becky Mayhew – Team Leader Apprentice

This case study is from Becky Mayhew, Team Leader Apprentice at CMS.

What is your job title?

Supervisor, Legal Services Unit

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to develop my leadership skills so that I can be a better supervisor for my team and provide better assistance to my manager.

What sort of activities did you do in your role whilst on the apprenticeship?

My day to day role involves supervising a team of around 30 paralegals, managing queries from associates within CMS, allocating tasks and overseeing projects. I also assist with the recruitment and appraisal processes. During the leading people module I held some coaching sessions with a colleague which were really useful in developing their role and working on my coaching skills.

What have you enjoyed most about your apprenticeship?

I have enjoyed learning new ways of doing my job more efficiently and effectively, such as new methods of organisation and learning about coaching.

How was your training with Damar?

My course was very interesting. It was mainly self-led learning using Damar resources, but I also had meetings and calls with my trainer. I found my trainer, Jan Mellor, very friendly and helpful. She was very supportive and approachable when I had queries.

What do you think your biggest achievement has been as an apprentice?

I found it challenging learning and studying alongside a full-time job, especially as I haven’t studied for several years, so achieving a distinction in my end-point assessment was my biggest achievement and I was very proud of this result.
