Apprenticeship Roles and Responsibilities: Who Does What?

apprenticeship roles and responsibilities

Key apprenticeship roles and responsibilities - employers, apprentices and providers

An apprenticeship is a partnership between three key parties: the employer, the apprentice and the apprenticeship training provider. Each has a clear role to play in helping the apprentice develop skills, gain qualifications and ultimately succeed in their career.

Understanding apprenticeship roles and responsibilities helps ensure everyone gets the most from the programme.

A quick introduction the roles and responsibilities involved in an apprenticeship is as follows:

apprenticeship roles and responsibilities: who does what?

If that feels like everything you need to know and you’re assured that you aren’t taking on the full responsibility (because of course, that’s what we’re here to help with!) then get in touch today. We can discuss your current requirements and how an apprenticeship could work for your organisation, whether you’re upskilling or hiring for an entirely new role.

Or, if like 35% of our SME research report respondents, you are still concerned about time commitments or the 33% who reported concerns about ongoing support, now’s the time to explore the role and responsibilities in more detail.

Because with the right training provider, the right apprentice and the right employer, there’s no doubt that apprenticeships can make lasting positive impact.

Employer responsibilities and commitments

Employers play a central role in creating an environment where apprentices can learn, grow and contribute to the organisation.

Employer responsibilities include:

  • Recruiting apprentices into suitable roles with genuine development opportunities
  • Providing day-to-day support and mentoring through a dedicated supervisor
  • Encouraging apprentices to put their training into practice and providing on-the-job opportunities to do so
  • Participating in regular reviews with the apprentice and training provider
  • Supporting the apprentice’s progression and long-term career development.

A successful apprenticeship requires employers to invest in both the individual and the programme, helping to build skills that benefit the wider organisation.

While employers play a vital role in apprenticeship success, the reality is that much of the support apprentices need mirrors good management practice. With the backing of an experienced training provider and the development opportunities apprenticeships create for supervisors and mentors, the process is often far less demanding than many employers expect.

Supporting an apprentice isn’t extra work, it’s an investment in both current and future talent.

The role of an apprenticeship training provider

An apprenticeship training provider is responsible for delivering and coordinating the off-the-job training element of an apprenticeship, helping both employers and apprentices achieve their goals.

Their role includes:

  • Supporting apprentices throughout their learning journey
  • Conducting regular progress reviews with both apprentices and employers
  • Providing expert guidance on programme requirements and funding
  • Helping apprentices prepare for assessments and achieve successful outcomes.

At Damar, in addition to the above, we offer:

  • Support and guidance for SEND apprentices and their employers
  • Careers education, information, advice and guidance for all apprentices
  • Over 45 years of experience in professional and business apprenticeships.

How apprentices drive their own development

While employers and training providers offer support, apprentices are responsible for making the most of the opportunity and taking ownership of their progress by:

  • Engaging fully with training sessions and learning activities
  • Completing assignments and assessments on time
  • Seeking feedback and using it to improve their performance
  • Demonstrating professionalism, reliability and a willingness to learn
  • Taking initiative and looking for opportunities to develop new skills
  • Maximising the potential of their off-the-job hours to apply to their role
  • Applying their learning to add value in the workplace.

Throughout apprenticeships with Damar, apprentices are able to contact their coach for one-to-one Teams sessions and support, as well as group coaching sessions with their programme cohort to ensure opportunity for collaboration and peer to peer learning.

With 74.9% of Damar apprentices completing their end-point assessment in 2025/26 so far achieving distinction, we are well versed in what makes a successful apprentice. They actively participate in both work and training, building confidence, gaining recognised qualifications and developing the skills needed for long-term success.
