Legal employers across the UK are under increasing pressure to find and develop skilled talent, all while managing tight budgets and evolving client expectations. CILEX Apprenticeships offer a practical, structured solution – allowing law firms, in-house legal teams and other legal organisations to recruit new talent or upskill existing staff, while building a loyal, work-ready workforce for the future.
What is a CILEX apprenticeship?
A CILEX apprenticeship is a structured, work-based training programme that combines practical legal experience with academic study, leading to a nationally recognised, degree-equivalent qualification. Damar’s CILEX apprenticeship incorporates a bespoke Level 6 Legal Professional qualification, as an alternative to CPQ, alongside the wider requirements of an apprenticeship framework.
Damar’s CILEX Apprenticeship typically takes around 30 months and has two primary components:
- Underpinning training across the common core of legal knowledge and skills required by CILEX Regulation, assessed by multiple choice exams at level 3 and an examination at level 6 in the apprentice’s specialist area
- Extended project – a high-level, employer-relevant piece of work – in the apprentice’s specialist area, assessed via a presentation and structured Q&A.
Throughout the programme, CILEX apprentices engage in:
- Independent activity on our digital learning platform.
- Regular coaching visits and progress reviews
- BARBRI’s online learning platform
- Specialist support from legal tutors including workshops, strategy sessions and 121 feedback calls.

Solicitor and CILEX Apprenticeships: What’s the difference?
Both a CILEX Apprenticeship and a Solicitor Apprenticeship are work-based routes, combining paid employment with structured study and practical development. However, they lead towards different professional outcomes.
A CILEX Apprenticeship includes the CILEX Regulation-approved Level 6 Legal Professional qualification and can support progression towards Chartered Legal Executive status. The CILEX Apprenticeship can also preserve an optional later route towards solicitor qualification via SQE1 and SQE2, though SQE costs and preparation sit outside the apprenticeship itself.
A Solicitor Apprenticeship, by contrast, is designed specifically around the solicitor qualification route. Solicitor Apprenticeships are currently subject to an age-related levy restriction, with levy funding only available for eligible apprentices under 22.
A CILEX Apprenticeship therefore offers an alternative that can support structured legal development and provide additional option without age-related funding restrictions – for example, those completing a Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship can pause between studies without feeling pressured into starting their next qualification immediately due to fear of funding deadlines.
It is worth noting that neither route is universally preferable; the right choice depends on the role, your apprentice’s ambitions, eligibility and your organisation’s long-term workforce plans.
What are the benefits of choosing a CILEX Apprenticeship for your legal team?
There are several tangible benefits to engaging in Damar’s CILEX Apprenticeship, whether you’re bringing in new talent or developing existing team members.
Supporting diversity and inclusion: By offering an alternative to traditional academic routes, CILEX Apprenticeships can help employers build more diverse teams, reflecting a broader range of backgrounds and life experiences.
Flexibility for future progression: Because the CILEX Apprenticeship preserves an optional route to SQE qualification, employers benefit from flexibility and are able to support apprentices who wish to pursue Chartered Legal Executive status while also accommodating those who may later choose to work towards solicitor qualification.
“As a firm we have chosen the Chartered Legal Executive Apprenticeship as it suited the needs of one of our colleagues; they aren’t ready to go straight onto SQE but are keen to progress and gain a recognised qualification. People are different and one size does not fit all. Damar offering an alternative has been brilliant for us and the staff not wanting to go straight into the SQE or maybe not carry it out at all.” Esther Withers, HR and Compliance Manager, Painters Law LLP
Work-ready capability from day one: Apprentices learn while working, meaning they apply new knowledge directly to real cases and tasks. This practical, on-the-job approach often results in employees who are more confident and competent in the workplace than those who’ve followed a purely academic path. Damar’s Legal Professional qualification enables apprentices to gain a greater depth and breadth of legal knowledge than CPQ, and the extended project enables the apprentice to make tangible improvements to their workplace.
Improved retention and loyalty: Employees who’ve been supported through an apprenticeship often feel a strong sense of commitment to the organisation that invested in them. This can translate into improved staff retention, reducing recruitment costs and preserving valuable institutional knowledge.
A genuine talent pipeline: Rather than relying solely on the external job market, apprenticeships allow you to grow your own talent internally, shaping skills and experience around your organisation’s specific requirements.
“We’ve always believed in developing talent from within – it’s how we’ve grown over the years. This apprenticeship route lets us develop our people and help them build their skills the ‘Farleys way’ – client focused but with a down-to-earth approach. Not everyone comes to us with a legal background, and we love seeing people develop their careers in different ways than the traditional solicitor training route.” Reta Rose, Partner – Head of Operations, Farleys Solicitors
A cost-effective route to upskilling. Many employers can access funding for apprenticeships through the Apprenticeship Levy. Smaller employers that don’t pay the levy can access 95-100% government funding for the apprenticeship training. Speak to one of the Damar Training team today if you have any questions about funding.
