Accounts Assistant: A Smarter Apprenticeship for Today’s Accounting Teams

L2 Accounts Apprenticeship

Following Skills England’s apprenticeship reforms, we’re redesigning our Level 2 Accounts or Finance Assistant Apprenticeship to focus on what matters most: helping your apprentices apply their learning in real accounting contexts. The result is a targeted apprenticeship delivered in just 9-10 months.

Every element of the new programme is designed to bridge the gap between exam success and workplace performance, ensuring your apprentices don’t just pass assessments, but become productive, confident members of your accounting team.

Translating knowledge into practice

Apprenticeships are designed to maximise impact in the workplace. It’s critical that apprentices not only pass their AAT exams, but are also then able to apply that knowledge to real work.

Our programme addresses this challenge with three strategically designed apprenticeship modules: Book-keeping in Practice, Management Accounting in Practice, and the Business Environment in Practice. Each module follows the relevant AAT exam, creating a direct pathway from theoretical knowledge to workplace application. Your apprentice completes their AAT exam, then immediately enters the corresponding module where they take the knowledge they’ve just been assessed on and contextualise it within their actual role.

Each apprenticeship module combines three sequenced components: additional learning, deliberate practice and work-based activities.

  • Additional learning extends beyond the AAT exam, introducing workplace-specific concepts and skills your team needs
  • Deliberate practice provides a safe environment where apprentices apply new knowledge through structured exercises
  • Work-based activities is where apprentices apply what they’ve learned to genuine business tasks.

This three-stage progression – learn it, practice it safely, then apply it – ensures your apprentice is genuinely ready to contribute meaningfully to your team.

What this means for your team

The redesigned programme delivers tangible benefits that directly impact your team’s productivity and your apprentice’s development. Faster time-to-productivity is the most significant gain – because apprentices practice in a safe environment before handling real work, they’re ready to contribute meaningfully much sooner, with less hand-holding and fewer corrections needed. Combined with the shorter overall duration of 9-10 months, you’re looking at a significantly faster return on your training investment. Engagement and motivation also improve dramatically. When apprentices see the direct connection between what they’re learning and the work they’re doing, learning becomes purposeful. They’re applying new knowledge to real challenges, which keeps them engaged, improves performance and creates apprentices who actively contribute to your team’s success.

The programme also integrates behaviour development authentically into real work rather than treating it as an abstract checklist. You assess professional behaviours as they naturally emerge in day-to-day work, with clear guidance from the employer guidebook, Damar OpenLearning and Profiler tool.

How we support you

We recognise that managing an apprenticeship effectively requires clarity, structure and ongoing support. That’s why we’ve built comprehensive resources specifically for employers and workplace supervisors to ensure you know exactly what your apprentice needs, what they should be demonstrating and how to assess their progress throughout the programme.

The employer guidebook outlines the specific areas of work your apprentice needs exposure to, clarifies the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they should be developing at each stage, and provides clear guidance on what to look for in the workplace. You’ll have access to OneFile for visibility into your apprentice’s progress and Profiler for tracking behaviour development throughout the programme. All workplace supervisors are also invited to a webinar at the start of their apprentice’s programme where our Delivery Team lay out what to expect and how to get the most out of the apprenticeship.

Support for the apprentice includes:

  • One-to-one coaching visits on Teams with a dedicated Damar coach
  • Interactive online resources to support the development of knowledge, behaviours and skills
  • AAT knowledge content delivered through live workshops by sector experts
  • Group coaching sessions during apprenticeship modules
  • Progress review visits every 12 weeks with the apprentice, supervisor/line manager and Damar coach.
