Most people only update their CV when they are looking for a new job. This is a mistake. If you’re only updating your CV when you need it, you’ll spend more time working on it and might even forget to include accomplishments that may help support your application.
Start by checking that your job title is correct and your contact information is up to date. Keeping your CV personal statement updated is very important as this will be the first thing recruiters will read, so it should accurately summarise what stage of your career you are at. Your personal statement needs to highlight your experience, work-related achievements and key skills.
During your time in your current role you will have learnt many new skills that you should add to your CV. This may also include relevant qualifications.
Whilst refreshing your CV it is the perfect time to remove outdated information. Having old information on your CV may be tempting because it makes you seem experienced. However, it can make it difficult to keep it to two pages, which should be the maximum length; recruiters don’t have much time to review applications. Things to consider removing from your CV are expired qualifications, work experience from 10+ years ago, and any skills you no longer use in your sector.
You should also tailor your CV to the job you are looking for. A targeted CV is better than generic because it proves you are ambitious enough to put in some extra work. When you are tailoring your CV think about your personal statement, and include some of the skills or qualifications mentioned in the job advert. In the skills section list any skills that have you that are shown in the job advert. If you have any relevant qualifications then ensure they are on your CV.
Once you’ve refreshed your CV don’t send it out straight away. Use a spell-checker to check your spelling and grammar and ensure your formatting is consistent.
By ensuring your CV is constantly updated it helps to build your personal brand and supports you to gain contacts within your sector.
Finally, give your CV to a friend or family member to have a final look over.
