Damar Training is proud to announce our intellectual property (IP) specialist pathway – an innovative addition to our paralegal apprenticeship developed in close collaboration with CIPA (the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys).
This is the first paralegal apprenticeship programme in England to deliver comprehensive, specialised intellectual property training as an integral part of the programme, designed to meet the real-world needs of IP practices and in-house IP departments.
The CIPA collaboration ensures every element reflects current industry standards and practical realities. When your apprentice completes this pathway, they’ll have specialised intellectual property knowledge that can takes years to develop through on-the-job experience alone.
Join our webinar on 18 May, 12.30 – 1.30pm to hear more from leaders and experts at Damar and CIPA about how this apprenticeship has been designed to benefit your business.

Intellectual property apprenticeship content
The IP specialist pathway spans 24 intensive weeks of focused intellectual property training, covering the breadth and depth of knowledge and skills that IP paralegals need.
- Core foundations: IP fundamentals, regulatory bodies, ownership rights, confidentiality and the paralegal role in private practice vs in-house settings
- Patents: UK and European Patent (EP) filing, prosecution, and renewals; Unitary Patent/UPC system; PCT international applications and national phase entries
- Designs: UK and Hague international design systems, including unregistered rights and post-Brexit EU considerations
- Trademarks: UK filing and prosecution; Madrid Protocol for international registrations
- Enforcement and other IP: Patent, trademark and design oppositions, appeals and infringement; litigation procedures; trade secrets, copyright and domain names.
Throughout, the curriculum emphasises practical application through realistic scenarios, case studies from actual IP practice, and exercises that mirror real workplace challenges.
Training delivery
We have designed a flexible, blended delivery model that maximises learning:
Specialist IP workshops led by subject matter experts provide focused training on complex topics, opportunities for questions and exploration and networking with peers.
Interactive digital learning between workshops includes video explanations, interactive exercises, knowledge checks and scenario-based learning accessible 24/7, allowing apprentices to learn at their own pace.
1-2-1 coaching with specialised coaches provides personalised support, helping apprentices connect formal learning to workplace experiences and accelerate practical application.
Group coaching and peer learning sessions enable apprentices to learn from peers, share experiences and develop professional networks within the IP community.
Review visits ensure apprentices progress well and learning integrates effectively with workplace responsibilities.
All Damar paralegal apprentices also benefit from O Shaped resources – content designed to create more well-rounded, client-led and people-focused legal professionals.
Benefits for your organisation
Cost-effective talent development – The apprenticeship is funded through the apprenticeship levy or government co-investment, making it a highly cost-effective solution to recruit fresh talent or upskill existing members of your team.
Specialised knowledge that contributes immediately – With this specialist pathway, apprentices will understand your work, speak your language and contribute to client matters far sooner, meaning faster return on investment.
Workforce retention and career development – The IP pathway provides a clear career development route, demonstrating commitment to professional growth and creating loyalty that reduces costly turnover.
Enhanced service quality – When your paralegal team has genuine IP expertise, they handle more sophisticated work, spot issues earlier and provide more valuable support. This enhanced capability translates into improved service quality, greater efficiency and stronger client relationships.
Diversity and social mobility – Apprenticeships provide pathways into legal careers for talented individuals who might not access traditional routes. By offering the IP pathway, you build a more diverse team, access overlooked talent pools and contribute to positive social mobility while meeting business needs.
