The apprenticeship is suitable for accounting practices or finance functions within private and public sector organisations.
About the level 3 accounting apprenticeship
The assistant accountant apprenticeship is aimed at individuals who undertake a variety of accounting duties within their role.
- Level: 3
- Length: 17 months
- Modules: 10 (accountancy knowledge training is delivered alongside modules)
- Exams: 4
- EPA organisation: AAT.
Assistant accountants will develop the ability to perform a variety of financial activities including:
- Maintaining financial and accounting records
- Delivering financial and accounting information and data to stakeholders
- Assisting with monthly and year-end reporting of financial and accounts information
- Assisting in the maintenance and use of digital systems by using software applications and packages.

How it works
Planning
The apprentice will undertake an initial assessment, where they will have a review of their starting point and areas for development using our Profiler tool. The apprentice will also attend a launch visit to ensure that everything is in place and that they have a clear understanding of the journey ahead.
On programme
The apprenticeship entails modules and AAT knowledge units, which involve face-to-face online coaching visits with a dedicated Damar coach, group coaching sessions, expert-led workshops and independent learning activities. The modules are outlined below:
In addition, assistant accountant apprentices undertake the following AAT knowledge units:
- Business awareness
- Tax processes for businesses
- Financial accounting: Preparing financial statements
- Management accounting techniques

End-point assessment
Following sign-off at the gateway meeting, the end-point assessment is conducted by AAT and consists of a knowledge test and a professional discussion.

Assistant accounting apprenticeship FAQs
After completion, the apprentice may be suitable to go on to the level 4 professional accounting technician qualification. For those interested in management, our team leader and operations manager apprenticeships may also be possible progression pathways.
If your organisation pays the apprenticeship levy, your levy pot would be used to fund the apprenticeship training. For non-levy payers and SMEs, the government funds 95-100% of the apprenticeship costs.
