How it works
Planning
The apprentice will undertake an initial assessment, where they will have a review of their starting point and areas for development using our Profiler tool. The apprentice will also attend a launch visit to ensure that everything is in place and that they have a clear understanding of the journey ahead.
On programme
The apprenticeship entails modules and AAT knowledge units, which involve face-to-face online coaching visits with a dedicated Damar coach, group coaching sessions, expert-led workshops and independent learning activities. The modules are outlined below:
In addition, apprentices undertake AAT knowledge units:
- Business tax
- Personal tax
- Drafting and interpreting financial statements
- Applied management accounting
- Internal accounting systems and controls
For more information on wider learning and the support available, please see our main accounting apprenticeships page.
End-point assessment
After sign-off at the gateway meeting, the apprentice’s end-point assessment is conducted by AAT and includes a role simulation (AAT synoptic exam) and a structured interview (supported by a portfolio of evidence).

Professional accounting technician FAQs
After level 4, apprentices often progress to chartered accountant status. Successful completion of the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting (level 4) also grants generous exemptions with ACCA, ICAEW, CIMA, ICAS and CIPFA. For those interested in management, our apprenticeships in leadership and management could also be progression opportunities.
Organisations that pay the apprenticeship levy are able to fund the training via their levy pot. Non-levy payers and SMEs can take advantage of government funding. Apprenticeships are 95-100% government-funded, depending on the apprentice’s age.
We understand that an apprenticeship is a significant investment, and we’re committed to supporting you every step of the way. You will have a business development manager to support you with your strategic workforce goals, as well as help with practical issues such as reserving funds on your apprenticeship service account. Once on programme, the apprentice and their line manager have a dedicated coach who provides 1:1 support throughout the apprenticeship.
